Exterior Finishing & Flashing in Kingston & Surrounding Areas
Exterior finishing and flashing are often the details that protect the most vulnerable areas of your home from water intrusion. At All Around Roofing, we provide custom exterior finishing and flashing solutions throughout Kingston and the surrounding areas, with a focus on proper fit, drainage and long-term weather protection. From chimney capping and removal to custom metal flashings, window flashing, roof-to-wall transitions, crickets and water diverters, we can help address the areas where water is most likely to find its way into your home. Whether you're completing a roofing project, replacing damaged flashing or dealing with a recurring water problem, we'll assess the area and help determine the appropriate solution.
Our Exterior Finishing & Flashing Services
Chimney Capping & Removal
Custom chimney capping can help protect an exposed chimney structure from rain, snow and moisture. If an unused or deteriorating chimney is creating ongoing maintenance or water-intrusion concerns, we can also discuss chimney removal and properly finishing the roof area.
Custom Metal Flashings
Not every flashing application can be solved with an off-the-shelf piece. We can form and install custom metal flashings for roof edges, transitions, penetrations, walls and other areas where a properly fitted flashing component is needed to direct water away from vulnerable areas.
Window & Door Flashing
Improperly installed or deteriorated flashing around windows and doors can allow water to enter behind exterior materials. We can assess problem areas and provide appropriate flashing solutions to help direct water away from the building envelope.
Roof-to-Wall Flashing
Where a roof meets a wall, proper flashing is critical. These transitions can be particularly vulnerable to water intrusion if flashing is damaged, improperly installed or deteriorated. We can repair or replace flashing in these areas to help manage water runoff and protect the surrounding structure.
Crickets & Water Diverters
Some roof areas require more than standard flashing to properly manage water. Custom crickets and water diverters can be used to redirect water around chimneys, walls, roof penetrations and other areas where water tends to collect or concentrate.
Custom Exterior Finishing
We can also provide custom metal finishing for various exterior applications where standard components aren't the right fit. Each property is different, so we'll assess the area and determine what type of custom flashing or finishing solution is appropriate for the job.
Why Proper Flashing Matters
Our Exterior Finishing & Flashing Projects
Flashing is one of the most important parts of a roofing and exterior water-management system, even though it is often overlooked because much of it is hidden once the project is complete. Its primary purpose is to direct water away from vulnerable areas and prevent water from getting into the roof, wall or building envelope. Water naturally follows the path of least resistance. Properly designed and installed flashing uses that principle to direct water downward and outward, away from areas where it could cause damage. Flashing is particularly important wherever two building components meet or where the normal drainage path is interrupted, such as roof-to-wall intersections, chimneys, windows, doors, roof penetrations, dormers and other transitions.
Roof-to-Wall Transitions
Where a sloped roof meets a wall, water can collect or travel along the intersection if the flashing is missing, damaged or improperly integrated. Step flashing is commonly used with shingle roofing at these intersections, with individual pieces incorporated with the shingle courses to direct water away from the wall and onto the roof surface. Proper detailing at the lower end of a roof-to-wall intersection is also important so water is directed out rather than behind the wall covering.
Chimneys & Masonry
Chimneys and other masonry structures create multiple areas where roofing and vertical surfaces meet. Proper base and counterflashing details help manage water at these transitions and reduce the opportunity for water to enter behind the roofing or masonry. Damaged, deteriorated or poorly detailed chimney flashing can contribute to recurring leaks and moisture damage.
Windows & Doors
Windows and doors are another important part of a home's water-management system. Proper flashing around openings helps collect and direct incidental water back toward the exterior rather than allowing it to enter the wall assembly. Sill or pan flashing is particularly important because it provides a drainage path for water that gets past the window or door assembly.
Roof Penetrations & Vents
Every penetration through a roof creates another potential pathway for water. Plumbing vents, exhaust vents, skylights and other penetrations need appropriate flashing and weatherproofing details. Deteriorated flashing, damaged components or failed seals around these areas can allow water to enter the roof assembly.
Custom Flashing & Water Diversion
Not every property has the same rooflines, walls, chimneys or exterior details. Sometimes a standard flashing component simply isn't the right solution. Custom metal flashings, crickets and water diverters can be used to change the path of water and move it away from vulnerable areas. The goal isn't simply to seal an area with caulking or sealant. A properly designed water-management detail should rely on positive drainage and direct water toward the exterior. Sealants can deteriorate over time, so they should not be treated as the only line of defence against water intrusion.
When Flashing Problems Go Unnoticed
Flashing problems don't always produce an immediate visible leak inside the home. Water can sometimes enter behind roofing, siding or other exterior materials and remain hidden within the building assembly. Over time, repeated moisture exposure can contribute to deterioration of sheathing, framing and other moisture-sensitive materials. That's why recurring stains, unexplained moisture, damaged exterior materials or leaks that appear around walls, chimneys, windows or roof penetrations should be investigated rather than simply covered with additional sealant.
At All Around Roofing, we look at where the water is coming from and how it is supposed to drain, rather than simply sealing the area where the water happens to become visible. Our goal is to create flashing and water-diversion details that work with the existing roofing and exterior system to move water safely away from your home.
